Match : India vs Australia 3rd ODI – Hero Honda Cup 2009 (Ind vs Aus 3rd ODI)

Date: 31st Oct 2009

Time: 14.30 (IST)

Ricky Ponting doesn’t like the idea of a seven-match ODI series. It’s too long, he believes. Now that the first two games in India are out of the way with one win each, he can pretend his team are about to embark on a five-match series. That of course ignores the question of momentum, which is firmly in India’s favour after their 99-run victory in Nagpur. Not a lot went right for Australia on Wednesday and, with injuries still plaguing their squad, they haven’t been able to enjoy a settled build-up to the third game in Delhi. Australia’s main problem surrounds their attack and its inability to contain India’s powerful batting line-up. An injured Brett Lee is flying home and an unfit James Hopes is expected to miss this clash, making India favourites to go 2-1 up.

For India, there isn’t much they can improve on their Nagpur effort, although they’ll be keen for Sachin Tendulkar to post his first decent score of the series. MS Dhoni’s remarkable century in the second match, combined with strong efforts from Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir, have given Australia plenty of headaches leading into the Delhi encounter. The one key difference between Nagpur and Delhi should be the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, which is not expected to produce a particularly high-scoring match.

India (probable): 1 Sachin Tendulkar, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.

Australia: (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Shaun Marsh, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Cameron White, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Adam Voges/Moises Henriques, 7 Graham Manou (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus/Doug Bollinger.

  2. Australia won the toss and elected to bat

Definitely it should be good match for audience.

  3. Three changes for Australia. The teams are up above. As you can see, Bollinger replaces Hilfenhaus, Manou comes in for Paine while Moises Henriques replaces Shaun Marsh. It’s also Henriques’ debut. He’s not an unfamiliar face for Indian audiences. He was part of the NSW team which won the Champions League. Very decent middle order hitter and useful seamer.

Just had a look at the pitch and well, there are quite a few cracks. I wouldn’t mind at all if it’s a low scoring game. I’m sick of these 300-plus belters. Are you?

  4. The decision to bat was a no-brainer actually. This pitch will play slower than the other two surfaces and batsmen will find it a bit difficult under lights. Ponting reckons 220-230 is a good score. He’s cheered up after what happened yesterday. The Australians complained about the poor quality of the practice wickets – they were wet and unusable. Why? Because of a miscommunication about the arrival timings of the visitors. The groundsman apparently wasn’t informed properly. Don’t ask! This sort of stuff always happens in this part of the world.

  5. After 10th Over Australia Scores 39/0.

  7. Ricky Ponting won an important toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a dry slow wicket at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.

Australia were riddled with injury problems and had to make three changes to the team that got beaten by 99 runs in Nagpur: Graham Manou and Moises Henriques make their one-day debuts, replacing the injured Tim Paine and Shaun Marsh, while Doug Bollinger has come in for Ben Hilfenhaus, who leaked 83 runs in the last game. The absence of Marsh has raised the question of who will partner Shane Watson at the top or the order. India made no changes.

The Kotla curator had said earlier that he had watered and rolled the pitch repeatedly to make the top layer firm and he was hopeful that the teams would reach a score of 240. However, not many experts have much hope in the track. It’s expected to play slow, low and turn as it did through the Champions League. Ponting reckoned 200-220 would be a good total on this pitch.

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.
